If you want to keep anything besides goldfish and minnows in your aquarium, you will need to buy a freshwater fish tank heater. When I first got an aquarium as a teenager, it came with a freshwater fish tank heater that I wanted to use for my assorted tetras and cory catfish. Being ahead strong teen who thought instruction booklets were somehow beneath me, and believing that a heater was pretty self-explanatory, I simply stuck the thing to the aquarium wall and plugged it in.
