Pet stores are full of fish tank ornaments that run the gamut of style from natural driftwood and rock formations to technicolor coral castles complete with glowing gems and mermaids. For what they are, fish tank ornaments can be horribly overpriced. One way to save money and get the exact look you want in your aquarium, is to create your own decorations at home.
Do it yourself fish tank ornaments can also be made in any style you like. Natural ones are easiest, as the materials are readily available and you can be assured they are safe for an aquarium. Taking a piece of statuary in an oceanic or underwater theme and putting it in your tank is not a good idea. Dyes, paints and other materials on it can be injurious or fatal to your fish. (more…)

My first fresh water fish tank had purple gravel, a big glass head, and weird black rocks arranged artistically in a gentle spiral shape. These days, 15 years later, I prefer a much more natural look for my pet fish. Freshwater aquarium set up for a natural ecosystem style can be just as much fun as any fancy art themed tank.
Every freshwater aquarium set up starts with the substrate. If your fish lived in their natural habitat, they’d have dirt, sand, silt or rock to swim over. Mimic a natural pond or river bottom as closely as you can in the fish tank. Use brown, tan or natural colored gravel or stone for the substrate in your tank. Some people use a mixture of sand and gravel, or even mix gravel colors to create the aquatic landscape. (more…)

Many people who are interested in getting a first fish tank think that the smaller t tank they get, the easier it will be to keep. Not only is this assumption false — it is harder to maintain stable water chemistry parameters in a small tank — but having something as small as a 2 gallon fish tank can make it almost impossible to stock correctly.
One of the most common errors that new aquarium owners commit is overstocking their tank. Faced with the wide variety of colorful tropical fish at the neighborhood pet store, they are become like a kid in a candy store and want to buy a few of these, few of those and a few more of the other. A 2 gallon fish tank cannot handle a few of anything for the most part.
There are only a few types of fish that will be happy and healthy in 2 gallon fish tank. One of the most interesting, and most colorful, is the betta fish. These fancy-finned fish are usually offered for sale in tiny plastic cups of blue water. A 2 gallon fish tank would be a much better home for one of them, as long as you add a plant or two. (more…)
